August could turn out to be a vintage month for Gigantic Gallery. We culled work by eight artists, both home-grown and imported, for a show entitled Terroirism: landscapes & other fertile fields, and the result is a robust blend of aesthetic profiles sure to delight any discerning palate.

Because the show combines a spectrum of styles, the viewer’s initial impression might be one of divisive variety, as if the show’s cohesion suffers from uncareful picking. But if one allows it to steep, the entwined and complementary aspects of each component bloom in the eye. Anne Jankowski’s limning of mid-summer is highlighted by the pyrography of Thomas Malcolm Cook. Christian Villacillo’s geometrics find a congruence in the surreal architecture of Drew Etienne, and their gravitas is answered by levity in the pop sensibilities of Jon Carling and Ian Seniff.

Terroirism: landscapes & other fertile fields harvests paintings, prints, and encaustic from Jon Carling, Thomas Malcolm Cook, Drew Etienne, Anne Jankowski, Karl Kaiser, Ian Seniff, Siolo Thompson, and Christian Villacillo.

This July we will be featuring work by eight Portland-area illustrators in a  show called Home On The Page. The collection is themed loosely around life in the illustrious Pacific Northwest, and Portland in particular, from which the artists drew their inspiration.

Home On The Page will feature work by Brooke Weeber, Meg Hunt, Maryanna Hoggatt, Jacqueline Bos, Brenda Rose, Susannah Kelly, Michelle Maule, and Shannon Larson.

The accidental laws of physics, the absoluteness of time, behind everything lies concealed an elegant mathematical formula. The world we see is but a convenient and simplistic approximation, its true nature only revealed in riddles and abstractions. It is from this perspective and a history in architectural design that Robert draws inspiration.

As for the subject of the ocean wave, it represents not just physical beauty and force but also a progression in time; a long languid journey from afar, a chaotic deconstruction… then nonexistence.

And as for the subject of “time” itself—an abstraction as omnipotent and poorly understood as this is surely a subject deserving artistic reflection, even if fully unresolved.

Robert Bickel’s show opens this Thursday at Gigantic.

We turn the big ONE this month. Thanks to all of you who have made this first year so incredibly special.

And thus the epic hanging project begins…

Our One Year Anniversary show - Cartes de Visite - opens this Thursday at 5:30.

As of Feb 20th, 20 artists will be involved. This show is going to be awesome.

Gigantic Gallery will be turning one year old this March! We met a lot of great people during our first year and, to celebrate our birthday, we want to celebrate them.

So the theme of our March show is the carte de visite, which were small, mass-produced pictures mounted on paper that were hugely popular around the 1860s. Baseball and superhero cards, comp cards and business cards and wallet-sized photos can all trace their ancestry to the carte de visite.

We want this show to be about the artists we met this year. We invited the artists to make as many small, personally-expressive pieces as they cared to. We hope to fill the walls.

Please come visit us during the opening on March 1st. It could be huge.

Johnny Acurso: This Oregon native is noted for being adept at capturing images in a way that are both nostalgic and extremely modern. Anyone familiar with Johnny’s work from the Society of Illustrators Los Angeles or his work with Time-Out New York, McGraw Hill, The Portland Mercury or MTV will agree that he is the perfect artist to bring Susan Lucci to life in a painting.
